[7/7/98] More information is being made public about Layne's surprise
appearance on a nationally-syndicated radio talk show last week. The show, Rockline, was
to feature Jerry, who -- as you know -- is spending his summer as part of that huge triple
bill featuring Days Of The New and Metallica. During the interview, Jerry announced that
he had a special caller on the line, and that person turned out to be none other than
Layne. Layne claimed that he has huge stuff in line for his future -- a future all band
members have said will include a reunion of Alice In Chains. He also told host Bob Coburn
that he likes Jerry's solo material, saying, I've always loved Jerry's songs. However,
according to Allstar, Jerry was a bit more forward on the future of Alice In Chains.
We really don't have anything planned for awhile, he said. But we're talking about maybe
putting out a box set, and possibly doing a couple of songs for that, and there's
definitely the possibility for more things in the future. But as for right now, Jerry
continued, especially with the record out, we plan on touring for the rest of the year. As
you know, Jerry's touring band includes Alice members Mike and Sean. And, quite
accordingly, the trio has busted out a few Alice In Chains songs on the road. However, the
big Internet rumor of the week still says that Layne might be on hand for the show at
Giants Stadium in New Jersey in a few weeks. Columbia records officials completely
deny the report, however. -- J.V.
[5/5/98] With Jerry's solo tour in full swing as the opening act for
Metallica, Alice In Chains fans have some worries on their minds: Will their favorite band
ever record again? In several interviews, Jerry has said yes. However, for fans lucky
enough to catch Jerry in action on the Metallica tour, they should take note on his backup
band. Alice In Chain'ers
Sean Kinney and Mike Inez will be a part of that band, according to Muzik. In fact, Kinney
told Muzik, he's in regular contact with the rest of the Chain gang. I talk to the rest of
the band all the time. And Sean, making quips on the OTHER band that'll join Metallica on
the road, made a comment akin to the fact that the Alice cover band Days Of The New will
be joining
us on tour. Ouch! Sean also noted that the band may perform a few Alice In Chains tunes,
adding that the band is definitely not broken up -- just on hiatus. He also commented that
Layne could possibly join the band on tour, leading to speculation that a full-fledged
Alice In Chains reunion could take place sometime this summer. When could that be? Well,
sources are
stating that a Metallica, Jerry Cantrell and Days Of The New bill will hit New Jersey's
Giants Stadium on or around July 13. That date, which will appease some 70,000 rabid fans,
will most likely be announced later this week. -- J.V.
